Weaving Workshop with Sara Hotchkiss

Imagine: you get to spend a couple of days in paradise, getting an introduction to weaving under the private tutelage of renowned rug weaver Sara Hotchkiss, and bring home a rug you made which even includes some tapestry. Can it get any better? Yes… because you get to weave with the colors of your dreams, matched ahead of time, if you want, to the decor of your own home!

Hannah InesonIf you ever fantasized of getting your hands on a loom, this may well be an opportunity of a lifetime. Stepping into Old Point Comfort, Sara’s place, feels like you’ve entered into a magical world. Rugs of all sizes, from bath mats or table runners to room proportions. Simple, old-fashioned designs, striated, checks, plaids, stripes, or rugs with stars, hearts, leaves, beads, flowers, or geometric shapes. Colors. Soft breezy blues, fresh fern greens, folk art inspired primaries, Mexican inspired hot shades, milk paint colors blended to a warm patina, lichen, earth and metal tones, and of course every flower from Sara’s dreamy garden. Enter her studio and prepare to be awed. Huge Swedish looms preside over the room. Fabrics - solids, prints, snippets of different colors and textures – are everywhere. And, there, in the corner, are two smaller looms, warped and ready to weave, waiting for you and your friend.

Sara Hotchkiss has been a weaver all her life. She studied painting, drawing, design, color theory and weaving at Skidmore College and University Without Walls. Under the tutelage of Eunice Pardon her passion for fabrics, design and color, coalesced on the loom and she’s been at it ever since. Sara’s work has been exhibited widely and featured in many publications and popular magazines like Architectural Digest, Better Homes and Gardens and House Beautiful. Most importantly, though, Sara loves what she does. We can't think of a better person to give you your first "feel of the loom".

I see it, feel it and have to weave it.
